The C&O Canal runs along a lengthy stretch of the Potomac River, preserving a set of locks that defined trade in the region centuries ago.

The day's temperature rose to unseasonably hot levels, reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit. I waited until evening for this little stroll.

I didn't have much time for my walk, so I just ambled and enjoyed the scenery. Fortune rewarded my focus on the presence with a deer that stepped onto the path about fifty yards ahead of me. I smiled and continued walking. It let me get a few dozen feet away before turning and bounding into the woods to join a compatriot. A lovely moment.
