There's no getting around it: Lake Fairfax is more about hot dogs than hiking, more water park than walking.

Still, it offers an impressive variety of pursuits in a relatively small area: a water park for the kids near the front, dozens of picnic tables, and a few dirt trails through the woods in the back of the park, sufficient to explore while the kids splash around and relatives grill burgers.

Those woods sit on top of some relatively steep hills, so the trails can climb pretty high grades. If you're up for less of a challenge, you can walk the paved path around the lake.

I did both, and I can't complain about either.
